1st Stoke Lodge Guides

Welcome to our web page!

We are a Unit of about 15 girls, 2 adult leaders and unit helper. We meet every other Tuesday evening during term time. Our district commissioner also comes up to most meetings.

Our leaders are Sue and Mandie and our unit helper's name is Kat.

We have 3 patrols; Frogs, Monkeys and Pandas.

What are we like?
Well... the Monkeys and the Frogs are the noisy patrols who love to play games but the Pandas are more into cooking and craft.

What have we been doing?
We have done loads, We did a fashion show to raise money to do our Party Planner Badge and get our Entertainer Badge, Two of the Guides who are doing their Baden-Powell Challenge ran a Ready Steady Cook Competition and We have done Outdoor Cooking at Woodhouse park, a Scout/Guide Camp Site, in Almondsbury.

Our Scrap Fashion Show... What We Did... A few weeks before the Fashion Show some of our Guides went to The Scrap Store in Bristol to get some material to make our costumes, then the fun began... Mandie's mum came up to help us make our costumes, and the Panda Patrol decided that they were not going to dress up so they dressed up a Rainbow as a Pixie (cute). On the evening of the Fashion Show a catwalk was made and candles were lit as the audience paid and sat down. The Fashion Show was great and everyone enjoyed it.

Outdoor Cooking... What we Did...We made box ovens so we could make muffins (yum) then we went to play rounders... But then FIRE! FIRE!... one of our box ovens had caught alight so our Guider and one of the Guides ran over to the burning box and put out the fire...no more muffins :-( so we made Kebabs and bread twists (yum). We had a great time!

'Ready Steady Cook' The two Guides that are working towards their Baden-Powell Challenge orgnised and ran a Ready Steady Cook Competition, they decided that it would be best to cook on 'one ring' gas stoves as we only have one oven at our meeting place. The ingredients we had were, jelly, single cream, evaporated milk, cheese, pasta, chicken, fruit and mushrooms, We had one hour to cook our meal and we were marked on Presentation, Timing, Apperance, Team Work and Taste. The overall winner were the Frogs, Well Done to them!

Swimming...Insted of meeting at are normal meeting place it was decided that we would meet at Thornbury Swimming Pool and went swimming. We all went in the pool and did what we wanted, some of us went on the diving board and some of us just played about. At about 8:40 we all got out of the pool and went to meet our Guiders in the cafe. We had a really good time and would go again!

BBQ and Games...On our last meeting of the term we went to Woodhouse for a BBQ and games. First we had an enrolment and then played a game where we had to go round the adventure course and all find three different coloured ribbons, we went of in patrols. The first patrol back was the Pandas, but everyone got a chocolate. Then when all the food was cooked we sat down and ate. It was a nice way to end a term.

A day trip to Dawlish...One Saturday morning we met at Bristol Parkway Station and went on the train to Dawlish, we were joined by 2nd Little Stoke Guides. When we arrived at Dawlish we went to the beach and painted pebbles and had a game of rounders, It then started to rain (what a surprise) so we shelterd under the rocks. When the rain stopped we decided to walk to Dawlish Warren as there was a fair there. When we got there we had lunch and went to look round in twos. After about an hour we had to start walking back to Dawlish as we had to catch the train home in a few hours time, It didn't take us as long to walk back so we were alowed to look round the shops in Dawlish. Then we got on th train and went home.

The Panda Patrol Sleepover.....On the first weekend in October the Panda Patrol did their Survival Badge and camped in our District Commissioners back garden. They set up their tent and went down to the woods to explore. After lunch they went back down to the woods to make an emergency shelter. When they got back they started cooking their dinner on a gas stove outside in the rain! Spaghetti bolognese was the final result with swiss-roll and custard for pudding. Then they lit a fire in the BBQ and had toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate. YUM. It started to get cold at about 9:00 so they went into the tent and got into bed but didn't go to sleep intill about 2:00 in the morning. By the time breakfast was over it was about 9:00 there had been warnings of severe weather eg. RAIN! so we took down the tent and went to collect some water from the river by the woods as part of the badge. "We collected water in cups and filtered it through socks to try and get all the germs out and when we got back we boiled it." By then it had started to rain so they were alowed inside to do the last parts of the badge, Know how to use a street map, Pack a bag for a day trip to an area unknowen to you, Find out about your local transport system and Recognise three edible and three non-edible plants.
There will soon be pictures so watch out.
